Tired, stressed-out, unfashionable hair finds new life at MODA Hair Design.
The salon is tucked away in a small storefront on Sixth Avenue in Hillcrest, and MODA stylists work to give their clients cutting-edge ‘dos while providing treatments to the hair and scalp to keep hair strong and luxurious.
BJ Norman is a man bursting with ideas. MODA is his second salon (his first was located in La Mesa) and he lives, breathes, and talks hair. When he isn’t jetting around the globe working as a guest lecturer or teacher, giving hair demonstrations or working on putting on special shows, he is in the salon dreaming of new ways to bring luscious locks to people in his community.
MODA has a creative styling team that does hair shows for television, photo shoots, and special events – like the recent party thrown by the modeling school located across the street. And when members of that creative team aren’t getting inspired from working on extra-curricular activities or cutting your hair, they are busy updating their training to make sure that the techniques with which they are trimming your tresses are the most up-to-date in the industry.
The focus on training is what BJ feels makes MODA stand out from the multitude of high-end salons sprinkled throughout San Diego. Stylists are not only always renewing their own training, but there are plans in the works to start a training program in conjunction with hairdressing schools. MODA stylists are also cross-trained to be able to provide multiple services equally well; at MODA your colorist is also likely to be the person who wields the scissors and vice-versa. All of this high-caliber training means that MODA is well-respected and recognized within the industry, which has led to a partnership with Joico and its ability to stock the exclusive Kérastase line.
MODA isn’t just a place for a cut and a color, it’s a place to get treated as well. The salon offers Express, Deluxe, and Post-Color treatments that use Kérastase to make sure that your hair is its smoothest, shiniest self. A small room in the back is Pamela Dixon’s space for skin-soothing (and smoothing!) facials, whether you’re looking for the more straightforward European facial, an investment in anti aging, or just a lunch time ‘quickie.’ Waxing is also available, as are eyelash extensions, and makeup application. These treatments practically guarantee you’ll leave MODA feeling polished and rejuvenated.
Not sure if you’re ready to commit? Sample MODA’s services during their monthly happy hour. Prices are lower while the atmosphere is fun – kind of like your favorite bar, except that you wake up the next morning with smooth skin and shiny hair instead of a headache and a nagging feeling of regret.
